Gedan Barai
Gedan Barai, or 'Downward Block,' is a fundamental defensive technique in Shotokan karate. The technique involves sweeping the blocking arm downward to deflect an attack aimed at the lower body. Starting with the blocking arm across the body, the practitioner swings it down in an arc, finishing with the arm extended and the palm facing inward, roughly at knee level. The non-blocking arm simultaneously retracts to the side of the body in hikite. This technique is typically executed in a front stance (Zenkutsu Dachi) to provide a stable and powerful base. Gedan Barai is primarily used to block low-level kicks or strikes to the abdomen or legs, providing a strong defense against attacks aimed below the waist.
