Shuto Uke
Shuto Uke, also known as 'Knife Hand Block,' is a crucial defensive technique in Shotokan karate. It involves using the outer edge of the hand, resembling a knife, to block incoming strikes. The block is performed by bringing the hand across the body from the opposite hip in a sweeping motion, with the palm facing the body. The wrist is slightly bent, and the fingers are extended but relaxed. The blocking arm moves diagonally upward or downward, depending on the target, while the other hand retracts to the hip for balance and readiness. Shuto Uke is effective for deflecting attacks and setting up counterattacks, maintaining the practitioner's defensive posture and readiness for the next move.
