Mae Geri (Jodan)

Mae Geri (Jodan), or '(Upper) Front Kick,' is a fundamental kicking technique in Shotokan karate. The technique involves lifting the knee to the chest, extending the leg forward in a snapping motion, and striking with the ball of the foot (Chusoku). The hips are thrust forward to add power, and the supporting leg is firmly grounded for balance. Mae Geri can be delivered to various target areas, including the stomach, chest, or face, depending on the height of the kick. The kick is retracted quickly after the strike, returning to the original stance to maintain defensive posture. Mae Geri is used to disrupt or drive back an opponent, targeting weak points in the midsection or head.
