Karate Shotokan 9th Kyu

回し蹴り(中段)

Mawashi Geri (Chudan)

Mawashi Geri (Chudan), or '(Middle) Roundhouse Kick,' is a versatile and powerful kick in Shotokan karate. The technique involves pivoting on the supporting foot while simultaneously swinging the kicking leg in a circular motion. The knee is lifted high and then extended, striking the target with the instep (Haisoku), ball of the foot (Chusoku), or the shin (Sune). The hips are rotated to generate additional power and ensure the kick follows a curved trajectory, aiming for the opponent's side, ribs, or head. The kick is typically aimed at midsection (Chudan) or head level (Jodan). After the strike, the leg is quickly retracted to the original stance to maintain balance and readiness for subsequent movements. Mawashi Geri is effective for attacking the opponent's flanks or breaking through their guard.
